Here at Boux Avenue we believe in removing the stigma and the taboo around gynaecological health and female intimate skincare. The launch of our new period pants has raised a few questions around our office on the best intimate skincare during that time of the month, so we thought we would catch up with the inspiring and aspirational Katy Cottam, the founder of the popular intimate skincare brand, Luna Daily. Luna Daily has worked with expert dermatologists and gynaecologists in producing products for intimate skincare that you won’t be shy about hiding in a cupboard. With their key statements being “Head, vulva, knees and toes, microbiome balancing body care for all skin, even your most intimate. And for all stages of Womanhood,” we could think of no one better to address our intimate skincare questions. These are not just around the time of the month, but to help ensure we feel beach ready for the upcoming swim season!
Thank you for chatting to us Katy. Firstly, how important is it for you as a brand to talk about female health and make the conversations about Womanhood and Gynaecological health feel natural, rather than a taboo subject? Through the brand’s own research, we discovered this shame, embarrassment and lack of great products to support women at all key life stages was missing - including daily care, motherhood and menopause, but also a lack of conversation and education about such important topics and body parts. As well as being passionately committed to normalising all body parts and igniting much needed conversation and education about women's health, I feel a big responsibility as the face of the brand to use our platforms to campaign for positive change, such as Meta, to stop the censorship of words like 'vulva' in social media and our “Public Cervix Announcement” campaign to raise awareness about cervical screening. My ultimate mission? I want fewer little girls to grow up feeling like I did, and more to feel like I do now - free of the shackles of shame and confusion and empowered with the information to make my own choices about what’s right for my body.
Now we are really excited to launch our new period pants. We have one style for medium flow and another for heavy flow. What are your thoughts on period pants and their eco-friendly benefits? Honestly, period pants are such a brilliant innovation - and I SO wish they had been around when I was a teenager getting my first periods. They're comfortable, reliable, and a huge step forward in making periods more sustainable. The fact that they’re reusable means significantly less waste compared to disposables, which is a massive win for the planet. Plus, they help reduce reliance on plastic-heavy period products, making them a great choice for those looking to be more eco-conscious without compromising on protection. When using period pants or just in general for that TOM, would you make any changes to your intimate skincare? Absolutely - lots of people don't know that period blood has a higher pH, which can make your intimate skin feel more sensitive or irritated (because our skin is naturally slightly acidic at pH 4-5). Using a pH-balancing wash, like our Everywhere Wash can help maintain your natural balance and support a healthy microbiome. Since period pants are thicker and designed for absorbency, they can sometimes lead to a bit more sweat and friction—so if you’re prone to ingrown hairs, our Everything Oil is a game-changer for soothing and preventing them. And for quick clean-ups on the go? Our The Spray-To-Wipe is perfect—just spritz on tissue or directly onto skin and wipe with tissue for a fuss-free refresh anywhere, anytime.
Swim season is coming up. Can you offer any advice on the best shaving routine to banish those pesky ingrown hairs? Ingrown hairs—annoying, painful, and let’s be real, frustrating. Firstly, what actually are ingrown hairs? In a nutshell, an ingrown hair is when a hair gets stuck under the skin. Instead of breaking through, it curls back on itself, causing irritation, redness, and those pesky little bumps we could all do without. They’re most likely to pop up in areas with coarse or curly hair, like your bikini line or underarms, especially after shaving, waxing, or other hair removal.
Some of the main culprits.. - Shaving and Waxing: Shaving, particularly against the grain, creates blunt hair ends that struggle to break through the skin. Waxing can have a similar effect if the hair isn’t removed completely, leaving it more likely to get trapped. - Curly or Coarse Hair: If you’ve got naturally curly or coarse hair, ingrowns might be a bit more common. The curl pattern makes it easier for hairs to turn back into the skin. - Dead Skin Buildup: Without regular exfoliation, dead skin cells can block hair follicles, trapping hairs below the surface. - Tight Clothes: Clothes that hug your skin too tightly can cause friction, irritating hair follicles and upping the chance of ingrowns. Prevention is key, and Luna Daily’s got you covered with some essentials to keep your skin smooth and happy: - Exfoliation is Essential: Our Everywhere Exfoliator with AHAs, lactic and glycolic acid, and gentle rice beads is perfect for sloughing away dead skin cells. This prevents clogged follicles and reduces the chances of ingrowns. Use it regularly, especially on your legs, armpits, and bikini line—your skin will thank you! - Gentle Cleansing: Our Everywhere Washes or (No)Soap Bar are designed to cleanse without upsetting your skin’s natural balance. Keeping things gentle helps maintain the health of your skin and hair follicles, reducing the risk of ingrowns. - Soothe Irritation: Already have an ingrown? Our Everything Oil is here for you. This multitasking oil calms redness and irritation—just a few drops on the spot, and you’re good to go.
