BRA FITTING GUIDE: HOW SHOULD A BRA FIT?

Bras should be comfortable, supportive, and basically invisible under your clothing - unless you're going for the underwear as outerwear look, of course! But many of us have been wearing the wrong bra size for years and a lot of that is down to not knowing how a bra should properly fit.

Our bra fitting experts always check our Five Faithful Fit Features to ensure a bra fits correctly -

•    Underband

•  Straps

•    Cups

•    Wires

•  Centre Front

So if your bra feels a tad annoying, or you’re trying out a new size after measuring your bra size at home, consult our bra fitting guide below to check it fits as it’s meant to, as we now dive into how to check the Five Faithful Fit Features at home.

HOW THE BRA UNDERBAND SHOULD FIT

The bra band should sit comfortably around you, lying horizontal across your back in line with the wires at the front - not riding up or digging in. The bra band provides you with most of the support, so it’s key that this fits correctly.

If your band doesn’t fit right and feels either too tight or too loose, try wearing it on a different hook. If you’re still having issues, you may need to adjust your bra band size. To do this, use our bra sister sizes chart to help you size up or down correctly.

HOW BRA STRAPS SHOULD SIT

Bra straps shouldn’t be a nuisance if your bra fits correctly. They should stay in place, without digging in. If you find your straps are falling down, try adjusting them. If they still don’t sit right, or they’re digging in, then you may need to measure your bra size to check your size is right, or adjust your bra size up or down if your size doesn’t fit right.

If the straps are digging in, try adjusting your underband size. If they are too loose adjust the cup size.

HOW THE BRA CUPS SHOULD FIT

There is nothing more annoying than gaping cups or overflowing cups - both signs of a bra that doesn't fit. A good way to check your cups fit correctly is to put a tight-fitting top over the bra you’re trying - this will highlight any gaping or overspill.

If your cups don’t fit right even after measuring your bra size correctly, and tightening your bra straps, you’ll need to go for a different cup size. The style of the bra and the shape of your bust can influence how your cups fit, so sometimes trying a few bra styles in different sizes can be the best solution for finding your perfect bra fit.

HOW THE BRA WIRE SHOULD FIT

If the wire doesn’t fit right, it can become really annoying - making wearing a bra very uncomfortable, very quickly.

The wire of your bra shouldn’t cut into your breast tissue, and your boob shouldn’t be spilling out the side of, or underneath, the wire. The wire should encompass all of your breast tissue, containing it within the outline of the wire. It should sit flat against your ribs all the way around, with no digging in or gaping.

If you’re having trouble with the fit of your bra wire, check your bra size, try adjusting your size, or perhaps try a different bra style, until you find your perfectly fitting bra.

HOW THE BRA CENTRE FRONT SHOULD SIT

The centre front of the bra is the piece of fabric that sits between the cups. It should lie flat against your skin, in the middle of the space between your breasts. If it’s digging in, or sitting away from your skin, then it doesn’t fit correctly.

Whenever you try a new bra ensure you use our bra fitting guide to check it fits properly. Remember you should measure your bra size every six to twelve months - checking regularly helps to guarantee your bras are as comfortable as they are supportive, all the time.
